Copan Ruinas

We have arrived in the town of Copan Ruinas, in the far western corner of Honduras, several kilometers from the Guatamalan border. It is a quaint little town with cobble stone streets that has somehow managed to keep its character even with the influx of tourists to see the Mayan ruins near here.

Two moto-taxis
Preferred mode of transportation if you are tired of walking the hills

The altitude is higher and cooler, the air fresher, and there is definitely less noise.

We are staying in a pension, a boarding home that has a number of Honduran students and developments workers, the family, and us, the only English speakers.
Classes don’t start until Monday morning, but we have already been challenged to use our rudimentary Spanish. It’s like SST all over again! In fact, Doña Elena, the proprietor and matriarch of the family, will intervene to make sure we have Spanish speakers at meals and chastise others if they speak too rapidly for us to understand.

We have a wonderful room, the Luna room, overlooking the valley and the town below.

We spent the time today exploring the town and surrounding area, checking into such essentials as laundry, access to the internet, and the quality of coffee served (it’s good!). We also watched a huge parade escorting a presidential primary candidate, Elvin, to a rally in the central park. Just for the record, Elvin waved to us and said “Adios”, a common greeting here. Too bad we didn’t have our camera to document the event. This afternoon we just relaxed, read and organized our casita for our four-week stay at the frontier of Honduras. You realize, this is the longest we have been in one place for some time.

We pray the language with become more familiar and you will be more comfortable speaking it. And enjoy your rest for the 4 weeks. Might feel nice to almost unpack!
