Our Apartment in Tegucigalpa

We have finally settled more permanently in Tegucigalpa - seems like a really long time ago that we left the U.S. to come to Honduras. We just returned to Honduras the beginning of this week from our trip to Haiti (which has a blog entry coming.. promise!....it's still at the printers). We actually drove the MCC truck to Teguc on Sunday so that it would be here for Darrin and Mark Epp, the Associate Director for Latin America, to take a trip to Danli. Empty truck, traveling to our home, hey - let's load 'er up! So we brought some office equipment including a printer and file cabinets, a nice book case, and most of the rest of our long-ago-packed suitcases.

We are living in an apartment for the time being as we look for a house to rent on a more permanent basis. It's in an apartment building in the city, a ways from the downtown area, in a nice safe area of town. The apartment building is above a pharmacy,
laundromat, and small take-out food shop. During the day there is a lot of activity, but at night it is nice and quiet. And at night the entrance is locked up like Fort Knox. Two sets of metal gates to unlock (and relock) before you even get inside.

This picture has a small caption showing our apartment on the second floor. (The bottom most is the "ground floor". My Wooster Community Hospital friends will appreciate that.)

There is also Benjamin, the "vigilante", who guards the place during the day. Thank goodness he doesn't carry a weapon as most other vigilantes do through out the country. I'm just fine having a pair of watchful eyes out there. Guns just invite trouble. Of course Benjamin has all kinds of advice about how to protect yourself when leaving the building and his domain. He will not hesitate to growl at you if you are leaving too late in the evening. And sending your wife off in a taxi alone is considered absolutely barbaric - as he informed some guests staying in our apartment recently.

The apartment is small, but with the addition
of a book case, some photos of family and a few Christmas decorations picked up in Guatemala, it has become a cozy home.

And with an internet connection, laptop, printer, a file cabinet, and some fancy rainbow colored mattress pads the combo office/dining room/guest room works out just fine.

For a grand tour of the apartment, more pictures are available on our web album. Check it out for some fantastic views of the city from our roof top.

If you would like to visit, the address is: Residencia Las Colinas, Ave El Dorado, abajo del Plaza Miraflores y La Universidad (UPNFM). In fact, we have had a number of guest this week and are counting on more this weekend when Rachel and Liz come down to bake cookies. Ah.... it's a home!

Great to see where you are resting your head now. Hope the house hunting proves to be fruitful. But in the meantime, looks like you have a pretty cozy place!

Nice place. Why look for a house? We have loved apt life...no yard, nice guard, lots of fun neighbors to observe and interesting things going on all of the time. Great blog.
